It just occured to me that the people who could use Linux, but don’t aren’t too lazy, but simply don’t know how bad Microsoft is. So here I’ll settle out to hopefully make you realize just how bad Windows is.
But where do you even begin? How do you sort or organise such a list? I’ll figure that out later. Let’s begin.
Introduction
Windows is an Operating System developed by Microsoft. It is used in 75% of Desktop Pc’s, Linux only in 4%, But Servers (Computers which run Websites, Games, etc. which need to be reliable) almost entirely run Linux. The Computer Hierarchy is Hardware > Operating System > Software. So if your Hardware is safe, your Operating System is the next most powerful thing in your System in terms of access and permissions. Everything runs through and on top of it. This is why having a safe and trustworthy Operating System is so important. Yes, also for you.
1. Technical Reasons
1.1 Windows is Closed Source. You can not see what happens on the back end. Microsoft might log your keystrokes (i.e. see everything that you type), see and store your passwords, read your emails, Access your Files, and who knows what else. It might also not do this. But we can’t know for sure. And no, these aren’t hypotheticals. (Have you heard of Copilot?)
1.2 Windows is SLOW. Windows is loaded with uninstallable bloat, unused programs, background processes analyzing your activities, and so on. It’s not your Hardware that’s bad, or getting worse. Windows is. It’s literally getting worse. It’s not made to be performant. There are no reasons or resources to make it so. Windows employees sure might be passionate about tech, but many are there because it’s just a job for them. They don’t care if it runs, they care if they meet their deadlines. The passionate people are over at Linux, where many don’t get paid for it. So if they do it, then it’s out of passion or personal need, and in either case they’ll want it to be good.
1.3 Windows is getting worse. Not only is it slow and spying on you, it’s also getting slower, and the spyware increases. The more time passes, the worse it’ll be and the more troubles you’d save yourself by switching
1.4 Single Point of failure. Everything is linked to a Microsoft Account. If that gets compromised (and it can, as I’ll get to later), your entire system goes away. Game access keys, Drive access! Email, and whatever else you have linked to that.
2. Moral reasons
Microsoft isn’t a charity. They want to make money, and the best way is to build a monopoly and or lock people into an ecosystem. Why is the Minecraft account tied to a Microsoft account? Why is the whole thing linked to a Microsoft account? To lock you into their system.
The moment you use Windows, you give Microsoft data. So whatever Microsoft is currently doing, you, indirectly, supported it. Have respect for others and for yourself and stop supporting bad things that then also treat you like cattle.
If I wanna go really far, one might say that if you could switch (only for those who could but don’t), but don’t do it, then you deserve to be treated by them the way they do. It’s not even active. It’s partially incompetence, and partially reasons that I won’t get into right now.
3. Economic reasons
Did you know that some people pay something like $100 for the displeasure of using Windows? No, really, they actually buy a key. Maybe even you did. My Apologies in advance. But there’s more. One drive, Office applications…They cost money. In fact, they’re one of Microsofts biggest Revenue streams. You are paying for barely functional Software that gets littered with bloat, because… why, even. Because it’s preinstalled, you don’t know the alternatives (they exist! see my other post), your employer wants it…well, if your employer wants you to use this stuff, and you understand that it’s bad, then I’d recommend looking for a different employer or looking to move towards self employment or financial independence through investments and a frugal life style. This sounds easily said, but it really isn’t that hard. People, again, just need to know this is a thing. but I’m drifting off the topic again.
4.Scandals
Ahhh, finally. I think this right here might be what moves people.
